My Story
“I'm very excited to be running the Big Half 2024, raising running for Speech and Langauge charity". Speech and Language UK resonates deeply with me for several reasons, firstly being a new father, I have become very empathic to children’s wellbeing, development and overall health. In my youth, and from time to time in adult life, I have had a stutter. I know personally how impactful speech and language development can be for individuals. Having worked my way through this alone, I wish I had known about Speech and Language UK when I was younger. The fact that 1.9 million children face challenges with talking and understanding words is alarming to me - the impact this can have on mental health, education and interacting with others is so important. Speech and Language UK are making a positive change to this, and their work gives me much hope.
By releasing a new collection of live recordings of my concerts, I am giving all proceeds to Speech and Language to support their brilliant work. They do fantastic work supporting children with speech and language challenges, and I am proud to run for them.”
I’m very excited to also be releasing some recent recordings of concerts I’ve performed. All proceeds go to Speech and Langauge, you can listen and buy here:

Listening To The Unheard - live recordings 2023 is a collection of improvised concerts comprised of electric double bass, pedals and synths. It marks a change in approach, reverting back to Maxwell’s teenage years when he was inspired by the improvised music of Jaco Pastorius’ debut album, John Surman’s ‘Private City’ and Su Tissue’s ‘Salon De Musique’. This collection of improvisations represents a moment of pause and reflection between studio albums, the chance to explore the immediacy and diaristic qualities of pure improvisation. Where Hollywood Medieval looked at subverting the potential of sampled instruments in a digital world, this body of work looks at how the double bass can be a chimeric tool of bonding and blurring synthetic timbres with acoustic ones. Microtones, blemishes, distortion and extended technique give this collection of music a personal and (sur)realist grounding.
All of the proceeds will go to the charity Speech and Language who Maxwell is partnering with to raise funds for this year’s The Big Half 2024 half marathon, September 1st.
